Copenhagen during the Christmas season is nothing short of enchanting. As the capital of Denmark, it transforms into a winter wonderland, with festive lights, delightful markets, and the spirit of hygge. I’m excited to share the itinerary from my trip to Copenhagen last Christmas, where I had the chance to experience the city’s charm firsthand. From cozy cafés to breathtaking light displays, this city truly comes alive during the holiday season, and I can’t wait to take you through my festive adventures with this holiday itinerary to remember.
Where to Stay
If you prefer the convenience of a hotel. I recommend staying near Nyhavn. This area is perfect for those who want to be close to iconic sites like the Little Mermaid statue, Amalienborg Palace, and plenty of restaurants and cafes. Hotels in Copenhagen take Christmas to the next level, with extravagant decorations, cozy fires and heated outdoor terraces, and delicious holiday delicacies.
However, if you’re looking to live like a local, stay in an Airbnb. I chose an Airbnb in Inner Østerbro. Since there were six of us, we loved the spacious, homey vibe it offered. Our hosts had even decorated a Christmas tree. The neighborhood was peaceful yet vibrant, with easy access to public transportation, grocery stores, shopping, and a variety of restaurants.
To make sure you experience the city's culinary offerings, be sure to verify restaurant hours. Many establishments are closed during the holidays, notably on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. Therefore, the first task upon arrival was grocery shopping to stock up on provisions for the stay. A short walk to the nearby Netto (a very nice supermarket) revealed a treasure trove of Danish treats, perfect for snacking between our excursions. Lunchtime called for a delightful meal at Livingstone, just around the corner from our Airbnb. This restaurant is situated right by the lake, providing a beautiful view to complement their tapas-style brunch menu. With numerous vegan options, it was the perfect place to relax and refuel before venturing out to explore more of Copenhagen.
Exploring Christiansborg Palace and Festive Lights
After lunch, a train ride takes you to Christiansborg Palace, where history and grandeur come together. Climbing to the tower offers a panoramic view of the city that is simply breathtaking. As the afternoon turns to evening, it’s time to immerse yourself in the magical Christmas lights adorning Strøget, the bustling pedestrian street. The festive displays at Illums Bolighus and Magasin du Nord are particularly captivating. A must-see holiday tradition in Copenhagen is the Royal Copenhagen Christmas Tables, a mix of art and table settings carefully crafted by three artists showcasing festive elegance in a way that’s truly special.
Dinner at Rossopomodoro sets the stage for a cozy evening filled with delicious pizza and pasta. Afterward, head to Balthazar Champagne Bar at the luxurious Hotel D’Angleterre, where the hotel exudes a fairytale atmosphere during the Christmas season. With its opulent decorations and festive charm, it’s the perfect setting to sip champagne and white glogg, embracing the holiday spirit.
Christmas in Copenhagen: A Day of Family and Tradition
Christmas Eve in Copenhagen is a cherished occasion, filled with warmth and togetherness. Start the day with a leisurely breakfast at your Airbnb or grab a coffee at a nearby café. After spending some quality family time, consider attending a Vespers service at Copenhagen Cathedral, where the beautiful hymns sung by the Copenhagen Boys’ Choir create a moving, heartwarming experience, blending faith and tradition.
In the evening, enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner at the Airbnb, where laughter and stories fill the air. If you’re staying in a hotel, be sure to make reservations well in advance for your Christmas meal to avoid disappointment.
Exploring Culture: Museums, Castles, and Tivoli Gardens
As the holiday festivities continue, the following days offer opportunities to explore Copenhagen’s rich cultural scene. A visit to the National Gallery of Denmark and the stunning Rosenborg Castle showcases the city’s artistic and royal heritage. Strolling through the beautiful gardens of Rosenborg, adorned with winter blooms, provides a serene moment away from the hustle and bustle.
The enchanting atmosphere of Tivoli Gardens calls for a visit on another day of your holiday adventure. Open during the winter season, Tivoli offers a delightful mix of rides, stunning light displays, and a charming Christmas market. Enjoy a meal at one of the many great restaurants in Copenhagen. If you're a beer aficionado, make sure to stop by Anarkist Bar, where you can sample beers from their own brewery, as well as a selection of brews from other local Danish microbreweries.
The true highlight is the breathtaking illumination show inspired by The Nutcracker, where light, sound, and music blend to create a magical experience. Tivoli Gardens is an unforgettable part of Copenhagen’s holiday charm and is absolutely not to be missed.
A Day of Fun, Food, and Beer in Copenhagen
During your Christmas trip to Copenhagen, don’t miss a stop at the flagship LEGO store near Strøget—it’s a great time for all ages! You can even build your own mini-figure to take home as a souvenir. Afterward, enjoy a picturesque stroll through Nyhavn, the city’s iconic harbor lined with colorful buildings, perfect for a holiday photo. For lunch, head to the infamous Nyhavn 17 for delicious food with a waterfront view, then embark on a scenic canal tour to experience Copenhagen from the water.
In the afternoon, make your way to the Home of Carlsberg exhibition in Nørreport, where you’ll dive into the history of Denmark’s beloved beer. Be sure to reserve in advance! After the exhibition, enjoy a beer tasting to sample some of Carlsberg’s finest brews. End your evening with a visit to Warpigs Brewpub, where you can savor hearty American-style BBQ paired with craft beer for a satisfying conclusion to your day.
Day Trips to Sweden
Take a short train ride to Malmö, Sweden. The medieval squares and quaint streets are perfect for exploring, visit Malmohus Castle and Art Museum (Moderna Museet) followed by a delicious meal at a local café.
A Day of Relaxed Exploration and Fun
As your time in Copenhagen comes to an end, take a free day to explore at your own pace. Visit the iconic Little Mermaid statue and Kastellet, or check out the Guinness World Records Museum for some lighthearted fun. Stop for lunch at Torvehallerne Market, where you’ll find a variety of delicious options. If you’re in the mood for more sightseeing, consider taking a tour of the Opera House or enjoying some last-minute shopping on Købmagergade. In the evening, meet up with everyone for dinner at La Neta’s in Nørrebro, and then head to Bip Bip Bar for an exciting night of gaming.
Ringing in the New Year with Fireworks
New Year’s Eve in Copenhagen is a celebration unlike any other. Start the day with a delightful tapas-style brunch at a local favorite like Wulff & Konstali, offering a variety of small plates that perfectly set the tone for the day’s festivities. Just before midnight, the city comes alive with fireworks. There is a spectacular display over the lakes, with the city’s bridges being your best viewing spot. But the celebration extends beyond the lakes-fireworks light up the entire skyline, with dazzling displays erupting all around Copenhagen that last well past midnight. It’s the ultimate way to say goodbye to the old year and welcome in the new one with breathtaking beauty.
What to Expect in Copenhagen
Local Language: Danish
While the official language of Denmark is Danish, we had zero issues getting by in Copenhagen, as almost everyone spoke perfect English. Whether you’re asking for directions or ordering food, you’ll find that communication is a breeze.
Weather
Temperatures in December are typically below freezing, and if the wind picks up—which it often does—it can feel quite chilly. The early sunsets also add to the cold, making the days seem shorter and colder than expected, so be sure to bundle up!
Money
The currency in Denmark is the Danish Kroner (DKK). As of the date this was written, $1 USD equals 7.05 DKK. Everywhere we visited had tap-to-pay options, making payments seamless and easy.
How to Get Around
Copenhagen is an incredibly walkable city, making it easy to navigate. However, the locals primarily bike everywhere. If you want to live like a true native, you can rent a bike through the Donkey Bike app. Bikes are available 24/7, and pick one up at hundreds of locations across the city. Just remember a few cycling rules: always keep to the right unless passing, use hand signals, and make sure your bike has lights if you’re riding after dark.
If biking isn’t for you, Copenhagen’s public transportation is very reliable, and was our main way of getting around. The Metro, S-trains, and buses all operate with the same ticket system. Remember to buy your ticket before boarding at ticket machines, which accept Danish cash and most major credit cards. You don't need to swipe your ticket to access the metro, but keep it with you in case a conductor requests to see it. There is a penalty for traveling without a ticket.
When you Arrive at the Airport
You’ll need a 3-zone ticket to get to the city. Taxis are readily available at the airport, but be aware that Uber and Lyft do not operate in Denmark.
